Vietnam issues list of strategic technologies

Vietnam has issued a new list of strategic technologies and strategic technology products aimed at accelerating digital transformation, strengthening economic competitiveness and enhancing national security.

Under Prime Ministerial Decision No. 21/2026/QD-TTg dated April 30, 2026, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung, a list of priority technologies and products, that will receive focused development support, has been approved.

The list includes 10 groups of strategic technologies covering key sectors of the digital economy and future industries. Digital technologies were identified as the core area, including artificial intelligence (AI), big data, digital twins, cloud computing, edge computing, the Internet of Things and blockchain.

Other strategic technology sectors include next-generation mobile networks, robotics and automation, advanced biotechnology and biomedicine, advanced energy and materials technologies, semiconductor chips, cybersecurity and quantum technologies, marine and underground exploration technologies, aerospace technologies, and high-speed and urban railway technologies.

Alongside the technology list, the Government also issued a catalogue of strategic technology products divided into two major groups.

The first group covers products that already have market demand and are expected to contribute directly to economic growth. These include Vietnamese large language models, virtual assistants and sector-specific AI applications, edge AI cameras, digital twin platforms, cloud computing platforms, 5G and 5G-Advanced network equipment, industrial robots, smart manufacturing platforms, and cybersecurity solutions for critical infrastructure and national databases.

The second group focuses on future growth-driving technologies and products supporting national self-reliance in security and defence. These include specialised semiconductor chips, quantum communication and computing technologies, deep-processing technologies for minerals and rare earths, offshore energy technologies, small modular nuclear reactors, Earth-observation satellite systems, and integrated platforms for high-speed and urban railways.
