Vietnam nighttime tourism to be promoted

Tường Bách

Nighttime tourism is an important growth driver in the global tourism landscape, especially in Vietnam.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), in collaboration with Quang Ninh province, organized a workshop on November 12 in the northern province to review and evaluate the implementation of the "Some Models for Developing Nighttime Tourism Products" project for the 2023-2025 period, with orientations for 2026-2030.

Under Decision No. 1894/QD-BVHTTDL of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, dated July 14, 2023, the nighttime tourism product development model has been piloted in the then 12 cities and provinces (prior to the merger of provincial-level administrative units from July 1,2025), including Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Khanh Hoa, Quang Nam, Hue, Da Nang, Lam Dong, Can Tho, Kien Giang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau.

After nearly three years of implementation, the VNAT acknowledges that the project has achieved many positive and substantial results. Many localities have changed their development mindset, considering night tourism a strategic direction in structuring tourism products, effectively mobilizing resources and the participation of businesses, artisans, artists, and local communities.

Tourism revenue in cities, where nighttime tourism models were applied, has increased by 20-30 per cent, creating many new jobs in the food and beverage, entertainment, and performing arts sectors, contributing to boosting domestic consumption.

Dr. Tran Van Manh, tourism economist, noted that a tourist, instead of ending his or her journey at 5 pm, can continue spending until 10 pm or even later for relaxation, entertainment, dining, or shopping experiences. "Each additional hour is a revenue opportunity for restaurants, shops, performing artists, and service operators," he added.

However, at the workshop, representatives from Quang Ninh and Ho Chi Minh City also shared about limitations such as lack of international products, imbalance in product development.

Accordingly, Quang Ninh proposed to have specific guidelines on fishing and squid fishing tourism, review and adjust regulations related to labor, noise, alcohol business, and entertainment services to facilitate night-time economic activities.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City has urgently requested the Government and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to allow a pilot project to extend the night service operating hours to 6 am in planned areas; allow the issuance of a public-private partnership (PPP) mechanism for relics to attract private investment in developing night products at important relics.

The VNAT will focus on eight main tasks, with the top priority being to complete the institutional framework and specific policies to create a clear and safe legal corridor.
