According to a resolution from the National Assembly (NA), there will be six specific mechanisms and policies piloted in the Mekong Delta’s Can Tho city for five years from March 1. These are expected to help it develop quickly and sustainably as an important gateway for road, river, sea, and air traffic and as the economic center of the Delta region.

Vietnam’s macroeconomic situation in 2021 saw many positive results, laying an important foundation for economic growth in 2022. However, with many difficulties still in place, it is necessary to adopt more suitable policies and measures to support businesses and individuals in order to recover and sustainably develop the economy this year.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has proposed increasing regular flights to and from Europe and Australia and at the same time raising the frequency of existing flights. The aviation sector conducted 64 flights carrying 7,847 passengers to Vietnam in the first week of 2022, when the country “reopened its skies”.

Vietnam’s tourism industry has never suffered such heavy losses as those caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The economic support package will therefore help restore the industry. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) has decided that it will continue to promote the pilot program welcoming international tourists.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a phone call with the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Li Keqiang on January 13, on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam - China diplomatic relations on January 18. Regarding the issue of goods congestion at border gates, he emphasized that the two sides need to closely coordinate and effective apply measures to resolve the situation, ensuring smooth trade to maintain stable supply and production chains between the two countries and within the region, especially for the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday. He also suggested that China continue to expand the importation of Vietnamese goods and step up opening markets for a number of additional agricultural products. Despite being affected by the pandemic, bilateral trade turnover hit a record $160 billion in 2021.

Covid-19 continues to be a threat to Vietnam’s economic recovery, but the country is now able to live with the pandemic. The increasing industrial production index and purchasing managers index, the higher recovery speed compared to the world, the thriving digital economy, and the socio-economic recovery program worth nearly VND350 trillion ($15.35 billion) are factors that will help the country in its recovery process.
