Con Dao National Park named in the IUCN Green List

Con Dao National Park in Ho Chi Minh City has been named in the Green List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a title for protected and conserved areas that demonstrate effective, transparent, and sustainable management, according to a report from the Vietnam News.

Con Dao is the 101st national park worldwide and the 3rd site in Vietnam to receive this recognition, after Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve in northern Ninh Binh province and Cat Tien National Park in southern Dong Nai province. According to IUCN, the Green List is not merely an "honorary certificate" but an objective measure based on international criteria for effectiveness, transparency, and equity in protected area management. To achieve this recognition, Con Dao National Park underwent a rigorous evaluation process, with the participation of independent experts, conservation organizations, and representatives of the local community.

Con Dao National Park, which is located on Con Dao island, about 185 km far from Vung Tau that has become part of Ho Chi Minh City since the merger of local administrative units on July 1, 2025,  covers more than 15,000 hectares of land and 14,000 hectares on the sea surface, with many ecosystems of mangrove, coral reefs, and seagrass beds, as well as rare plants and animals. There are more than 1,000 species of flora and 155 forest animals.

The park is home to green turtles, an endangered species listed in the Viet Nam Red Book.

In January 2009, Con Dao National Park set the record for the "Most Hatchlings Released into the Sea in Vietnam." It was also the first in Vietnam to join the Indian Ocean-Southeast Asia (IOSEA), a marine turtle conservation network.
