Vietnam currently hosts more than 170 foreign-invested semiconductor projects with total registered capital nearing $11.6 billion, according to Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui Hoang Phuong.
These projects are concentrated in two key stages of the global semiconductor value chain: chip design, and packaging and testing.
They involve around 60 chip design firms, 8 packaging and testing projects, and over 20 enterprises supplying semiconductor materials and equipment. Major global players such as Intel, Amkor, Hana Micron, Coherent, and VDL have established operations in the country.
Speaking at SemiExpo Vietnam 2025, opened on November 7, Deputy Minister Phuong emphasized that Vietnam holds substantial potential and structural advantages to accelerate semiconductor industry development. Its strategic geographical position in Southeast Asia—proximate to leading chip manufacturing hubs—positions the country to effectively capture opportunities from the ongoing global supply chain realignment.
Vietnam’s high level of economic openness and extensive network of free trade agreements further enhances its investment environment for high-tech and semiconductor corporations.
The country also benefits from a robust electronics manufacturing base, with hardware export turnover surpassing $132 billion in 2024, and a large, youthful, and increasingly skilled workforce. This includes 1.9 million workers in the technology sector and over 7,000 trained chip design engineers, forming a critical talent pipeline for semiconductor expansion.
