The Ministry of Construction has approved an implementation plan for the Southern Region Waterway and Logistics Corridor Development Project, as a public investment initiative.

The project aims to enhance the capacity, efficiency, and safety of two key waterway corridors in the Southern region, contributing to the development of a sustainable logistics system and reducing transportation costs.

The total investment for the project is over $163 million; of which, over $106 million comes from a World Bank (WB) loan, and over $55 million is domestic counterpart capital.

The project is divided into three components. Two components focus on upgrading two main corridor routes: the East-West corridor, with a total length of approximately 197 km, and the North-South corridor, connecting ports from the southern province of Dong Nai to the Cai Mep - Thi Vai deep-water port in the former province of Ba Ria - Vung Tau (now part of Ho Chi Minh City), with a length of about 82 km.

Specifically, the East-West corridor connects Can Tho Port in the Mekong Delta city of the same name, and Ho Chi Minh City Port, with investment in upgrading the fairway to Class II standards. After upgrading, the transportation distance will be reduced by approximately 92 km compared to the existing route, allowing vessels with a tonnage of over 300 tons to navigate.

For the North-South corridor project,  the investment scope includes dredging and installing a signaling system, which will allow vessels with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of up to 5,000 DWT and container ships of 200 TEUs (equivalent to 200 trucks) to operate smoothly year-round.

The project will be implemented in the provinces of Tien Giang (now Dong Thap), Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Vinh Long (now Vinh Long), Long An (now Tay Ninh), and Dong Nai. The project implementation period is from 2025 to 2029, with a possibility of extension to 2030 according to the plan.
