Nearly 20 tons of fresh Vietnamese lychees are being sold at Safeway and Albertsons supermarkets on the West Coast of the US, including California, Oregon, and Washington, according to the Vietnam Trade Office in San Francisco.
Safeway and Albertsons are the largest supermarket chains on the West Coast, with 913 and over 300 outlets, respectively.
A pound of lychees sell for $3.99, which is competitive compared to fresh lychees imported from China and Mexico, which sell at the Asian market in San Francisco for $4.99 a pound.
The fresh lychees imported from Vietnam, with the brand name Golden Lychee, have been available in US supermarkets since June 30 and are being distributed by Dragonberry Produce Inc.
