Hanoi breaks ground on Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao metro line project
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Metro Line 2 project held on October 9.

The Hanoi People's Committee commenced construction on the Urban Railway (Metro) Line 2 project (Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao section), with a total investment of over VND35 trillion (over $1.32 billion), on October 9.

The event is dedicated to the 71st anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2025)

The metrol line has a total length of nearly 11km, including 1.94km elevated and 9km underground, with 10 stations: C1-Xuan Dinh, C2-Ngoai Giao Doan, C3-Tay Ho Tay, C4-Buoi, C5-Quan Ngua, C6-Bach Thao, C7-Ho Tay, C8-Hang Dau, C9-Hoan Kiem, and C10-Tran Hung Dao.

This is a nationally significant project, utilizing ODA loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) combined with counterpart funds from Hanoi's city budget.

Notably, the project is planned according to the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model at Xuan Dinh Depot, making it the first TOD model in Vietnam. This model integrates passenger transportation hub functions with services, commerce, and mixed-use residential areas.

Furthermore, underground station C9 will connect with the square and park on the East side of Hoan Kiem Lake, creating a TOD area that ensures the integration of underground transport with public spaces, heritage preservation, and distinctive architectural highlights – contributing to honoring the thousand-year cultural and historical center of the Capital.

In the coming period, Hanoi plans to develop 15 urban railway lines totaling 619km, forming a large, modern, and synchronous public transport network, ensuring fast, sustainable, and environmentally friendly travel.
