The Ho Chi Minh City People's Council has approved adjustments to the investment plan for infrastructure development and environmental improvement project along the Tham Luong - Ben Cat - Nuoc Len Canal.
The project will connect Long An province via Cho Dem river and Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces via the Saigon River.
With the approved adjustments, the total investment for the project now exceeds VND9.03 trillion (approximately $355 million), reflecting an increase of over VND830 billion ($32.6 million) from the initial plan.
The municipal People's Committee highlighted that the project aims to enhance drainage, control flooding, and remediate pollution, while also upgrading transportation infrastructure. As a vital social service infrastructure initiative, it is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents and bolster the city's future socio-economic development.
It is the longest canal renovation project in Ho Chi Minh City, stretching through district 12, and Go Vap, Binh Thanh, Tan Binh, Binh Tan, Tan Phu, and Binh Chanh districts.
Key components of the project include constructing retaining walls along both banks of the more than 32 km long canal, dredging the entire canal to a bottom width ranging from 30m to 90m, renovating and repairing cross-drainage gates, constructing 12 wharves along the canal, and building roads along both banks. These roads will be 8m to 12m wide, featuring sidewalks, a rainwater drainage system, technical trenches, lighting, and bridges.
The construction began in February 2023, and all 10 construction packages are currently underway. By the end of October, 37.9% of the total planned volume of the project had completed.
