The Ministry of Transport will add the Can Gio international transshipment port in Ho Chi Minh City to the national seaport development master plan in the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050.
Located in Can Gio district, the port has a designed capacity of accommodating the world’s largest container vessels with a capacity of 24,000 TEUs.
Total investment is estimated at $6 billion.
The project consists of seven investment phases from now to 2045. The first phase is expected to begin in 2024 and be operational by 2027.
By 2030, the project is expected to have a total cargo capacity of 4.8 million TEUs, gradually increasing to 16.9 million TEUs when the project operates at full capacity, which is expected in 2047.
The port will be able to accommodate mother ships up to 250,000 DWT or 24,000 TEUs, feeder vessels ranging from 10,000 to 65,000 DWT, and barges of up to 8,000 tons.
Located in the Thi Vai maritime channel, Can Gio has deep water, is not seriously affected by waves or wind, and is ideal for international container transshipment.
