The Van Phong 1 BOT Thermal Power Plant in south-central Khanh Hoa province, a key power project in the south and south-central regions, was inaugurated on March 13, the Dau tu (Investment) online newspaper has reported.

It will supply an additional 8.5 billion kWh a year, equivalent to nearly 3 per cent of total electricity output nationwide.

Located at the Van Phong Economic Zone, the project is the largest invested in by Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation in Khanh Hoa.

The plant uses ultra-supercritical technology, with modern equipment, ensuring high efficiency while meeting strict environmental standards.

With total investment of nearly $2.58 billion, the plant has two turbines with a designed capacity of 1,432 MW.

The coal-fired thermal power plant was constructed under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract signed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and will be handed over to the Vietnamese Government after 25 years of operation.
