Party General Secretary To Lam on November 13 inspected the construction of Long Thanh International Airport in southern Dong Nai province, a national key project with major significance for infrastructure development and regional as well as international connectivity.
The Party leader requested relevant agencies to develop a comprehensive set of criteria to assess the airport’s international competitiveness, focusing on service quality and passenger experience, operational productivity and efficiency, and the airport’s connectivity and hub potential within the regional aviation network. The overarching goal, he stressed, is to make Long Thanh one of Southeast Asia’s most attractive aviation destinations, capable of matching and even surpassing the region’s leading airports.
He also instructed investors and agencies to proactively prepare for Phase 2 construction, including proposals for additional investment in terminals and runways to increase the airport’s capacity.
To ensure the airport operates at its full potential, the Party chief emphasized the need to complete crucial transport links connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Dong Nai, including Long Thanh airport, and other localities in the country's southern region. He called for speeding up construction of the Bien Hoa–Vung Tau and Ben Luc–Long Thanh expressways, Ring Roads 3 and 4 in Ho Chi Minh City, and the early implementation of the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh light rail line, which will eventually connect the city’s metro network directly to the airport.
Long Thanh International Airport covers 5,000 hectares and will have a total designed capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year once fully completed.
Construction of the airport’s first phase began in 2020 and is slated for completion in 2026. Phase 1 will enable the airport to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.
