Thanh Hoa authorities have agreed in principle to invest in upgrading the infrastructure of Tho Xuan Airport through a public-private partnership.
After more than 10 years of operation, the airport has become one of the growth drivers for development in the province. However, in recent years, passenger traffic through the airport has exceeded its designed capacity.
The facility is designated in the planning as an international airport, serving as a backup for Hanoi-based Noi Bai International Airport. Its operational nature is a shared civilian and military airfield.
According to the proposal for a public-private partnership for investment and operation of Tho Xuan Airport, the planned capacity for the airport in the 2021-2030 period is approximately 5 million passengers per year.
The estimated investment capital, estimated at some VND8.2 trillion ($321.67 million), will be spent on various projects, including: the renovation and upgrade of Terminal T1 to reach a capacity of 1.5 million passengers per year, connecting seamlessly with the newly constructed Terminal T2.
The aircraft parking apron will be expanded to 16 aircraft positions. A new Terminal T2 (international terminal) will be built with a capacity to handle 3.5 million passengers per year, raising the total capacity to 5 million passengers per year.
