Vietnam's Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Hoang Minh on May 20 had a meeting in Hanoi with Director General for Trade Policy at Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Camilla Mellander, to discuss cooperation in research, innovation, digital transformation, and business connectivity between the two countries.
Deputy Minister Minh affirmed that Vietnam highly values Sweden’s support, particularly through cooperation programs in science, technology, and innovation across different stages of Vietnam’s development, including research collaboration, training, and knowledge transfer initiatives.
He also expressed his hope that both sides would further strengthen cooperation, with a focus on connecting research funds such as the Vietnam's National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED), while expanding collaboration in atomic energy, nuclear safety, 5G/6G telecommunications, innovation, and startups.
According to the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) under the Ministry of Finance, as of the end of April 2026, Sweden remained the leading Nordic investor in Vietnam, with total registered FDI reaching more than $1.76 billion across 111 valid projects.
Mr. Minh welcomed Swedish enterprises to invest, transfer technology, and participate more deeply in Vietnam’s value chains. At the same time, Vietnam pledged support in areas related to intellectual property, data protection, production materials, and the investment environment in order to promote more substantive cooperation in the coming period.
Ms. Camilla Mellander, for her part, stated that Sweden would continue cooperating with Vietnam in research, development, and technology, while expanding collaboration in Sweden’s areas of strength, including innovation, startup ecosystems, R&D, intellectual property, 5G/6G telecommunications, and safe nuclear energy.
During the meeting, many Swedish technology corporations also discussed cooperation orientations in digital infrastructure, automation, textile recycling, pharmaceuticals, radiation monitoring, and industrial software.
According to the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025 Report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Sweden continued to rank second globally in innovation. Meanwhile, Vietnam is accelerating the development of science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation as new drivers of economic growth. This creates significant opportunities for Vietnam to learn from Sweden’s experience, access advanced technologies, and strengthen cooperation with Sweden’s leading partners in high-tech sectors.
