A new road bridge spanning the Red River between Vietnam's northern Lao Cai Province and  China's Yunnan Province is expected to have the main span closure by August 30, 2026.

The bridge, invested in by both countries, is regarded as one of the most important transport infrastructure developments between the two neighboring border localities.

The bridge, named after Bat Xat area of Vietnam's Lao Cai and Ba Sai area of China's Yunnan,  has a total investment of approximately VND1.5 trillion ($57 million), including around VND300 billion for the section on the Vietnamese side. Designed as a low-pylon cable-stayed bridge, the structure will stretch 420 meters in length, with 260 meters located on the Chinese side. The bridge deck will be 35.3 meters wide and accommodate six traffic lanes.

Once opened, the Bat Xat–Ba Sai bridge will create a new transport link along the Kunming–Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong–Quang Ninh economic corridor. The project is expected to ease congestion at existing border crossings, improve customs clearance capacity, lower logistics costs and facilitate trade and investment between the two countries.

The bridge will also serve as a key component of the planned Lao Cai–Hong Ha Cross-Border Economic Cooperation Zone, supporting deeper economic integration and development in the border region.
