Vietnam dispatched 340,000 doses of its African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccine to the Philippines early September 9 morning, marking the largest ASF vaccine export in history.
The shipment, which departed at 2:30am, represents the second official batch sent to the Philippines following the country’s decision to implement mass vaccination using Vietnam-produced vaccines.
Dr. Nguyen Van Diep, General Director of AVAC Joint Stock Company, confirmed that the vaccines were transported under strict cold-chain protocols, with ice used throughout the journey to maintain optimal storage conditions.
Vietnam made global headlines in July 2023 when it became the first country to successfully develop and authorize circulation of an ASF vaccine. To date, it remains the only nation capable of producing the vaccine at scale. The AVAC ASF LIVE vaccine, developed by AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company, has seen widespread domestic use and is now gaining traction in international markets—most notably in the Philippines.
The partnership began in 2023 when the Philippine Department of Agriculture ordered tens of thousands of doses for trial vaccinations conducted by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI).
Following promising results, the Philippine Department of Health and Department of Agriculture approved the import of 160,000 doses in August 2024. With today’s shipment of 340,000 additional doses, the total number of AVAC ASF LIVE vaccines imported by the Philippines has reached half a million.
Juancho Robles, General Director of KPP Power Commodities—the authorized importer and distributor—shared encouraging results from the initial rollout: “Official monitoring data from the Philippine Bureau of Animal Industry confirm that the vaccine achieved 92.78% effectiveness in forming antibodies against ASF. Vaccinated pig herds remained healthy, significantly reducing the risk of disease outbreaks.”
The newly arrived doses are expected to be distributed through the Philippines' government-led vaccination programs, with priority given to officially registered farms. The move underscores the Philippine authorities’ confidence in the quality and efficacy of Vietnam’s pioneering vaccine.
