The Mekong Delta’s Vinh Long province held a ceremony on April 19 to announce the export of the first batch of 84 tons of sweet potatoes to China.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Liet said this is a good opportunity to develop the sweet potato sector of Vietnam towards modernity, high-quality, safety, and sustainability, with close connections from production to consumption, contributing to improving the value of Vietnamese sweet potatoes in the international market.
China earlier confirmed that 13 packaging establishments and 70 sweet potato growing areas in Vietnam met export requirements, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Of the 70 eligible growing areas, Vinh Long has 27.
Its Binh Tan district has more than 10,000 ha of the crop with an average output of 300 tons a year.
Vietnam is home to about 100,000 ha of sweet potato cultivation areas with total output of 1.2-1.3 million tons, which is more than sufficient for exports.
