Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc has signed
Under a Prime Ministerial signed recently by Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc, a new master planning framework for Can Tho, outlining an ambitious vision to transform the Mekong Delta city into a major regional growth pole by 2050, with a longer-term outlook to 2075, has been approved.
The plan aims to position Can Tho as the economic and urban nucleus of the Mekong Delta, serving as a key driver of regional development with expanded access toward the sea.
Under the strategy, Can Tho is expected to develop into a distinctive river-based urban center, combining its natural waterways with modern infrastructure to become one of Southeast Asia’s notable waterfront cities. The city is also envisioned as a major maritime trade gateway linked to Tran De Seaport, enhancing import-export connectivity and strengthening economic corridors across the sub-region.
Looking ahead to 2075, Can Tho is projected to join the ranks of Asia’s more developed cities, characterized by sustainable, inclusive growth and strong resilience to climate change.
By 2050, the city’s population is forecast to reach approximately 6.1 million, including 4.1 million permanent residents. Urban construction land is expected to expand to between 85,000 and 112,000 hectares, reflecting the scale of the city’s long-term development ambitions.
