At the International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC), students gain a strong academic foundation while also developing leadership skills and the character of compassionate global citizens.. Through an inquiry-based learning approach, the school encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a global outlook, preparing students to adapt in a fast-changing environment.
What is inquiry-based learning?
At ISHCMC, inquiry-based learning means students are active participants in their own education. Rather than relying mainly on textbooks or memorizing facts, they are encouraged to ask questions, investigate real-world problems, and find answers through exploration and research. Dr. Tosca Killoran, Deputy Head of School at ISHCMC, describes it as “the spark behind a love of learning.”
For instance, when studying fish migration, students don’t just read about it, they visit a river to collect data and observe fish firsthand. This practical approach helps them engage more deeply and retain knowledge more effectively. ISHCMC’s curriculum also aligns with international academic standards such as AERO and ACARA, ensuring a consistent and rigorous framework.
Why the model challenges traditional education
Traditional education often focuses on memorizing information and repeating it in assessments. Inquiry-based learning instead emphasizes tackling complex questions and solving real-world problems. Teachers act as guides, prompting deeper thinking and encouraging independent research. This approach aims to develop not only subject knowledge but also critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Building leadership skills through inquiry
Inquiry-based learning also supports leadership development. As students work on projects and explore ideas, they naturally take on leadership roles - learning how to communicate effectively, collaborate with peers, and address challenges together. Dr. Killoran notes that leadership is integrated into the learning process, with opportunities both in and outside the classroom.
Students are encouraged to join extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, and global citizenship projects. These experiences help them practice leadership, manage their time, and build confidence in their abilities.
Preparing students for a global future
A key aim of inquiry-based learning at ISHCMC is to prepare students to be responsible global citizens. With a student body representing more than 60 nationalities, the school offers a setting where students can engage with different cultures, perspectives, and global issues.
Through projects that address international challenges, students develop empathy, cross-cultural communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across borders. They also have the chance to connect with peers from around the world, gaining experience in navigating a diverse and interconnected society.

A track record of achievement
While inquiry-based learning is valued for its interactive and hands-on approach, it also maintains high academic expectations. ISHCMC students often outperform global averages in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (IBDP) and on MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) tests. The school offers a wide range of extracurricular options, including more than 95 After-School Activities (ASA) and over 26 advanced programs.
Counseling services support students in the university application process, with 98% of the Class of 2025 receiving offers from their top-choice institutions. In 2025, 57% of students earned a bilingual diploma in up to 10 languages, well above the global average of 23%. Graduates have gone on to universities worldwide, including Harvard, Yale, and the University of Chicago.
Success in action
Danko, a student who joined ISHCMC five years ago after transferring from an international school in Kenya, quickly adapted to the school’s environment of questioning, sharing perspectives, and self-directed exploration. He has achieved strong academic results and taken part in activities such as Model United Nations and the Student Leadership Council. These experiences have strengthened his leadership, independent thinking, and adaptability in a multicultural setting.
Building future innovators
Inquiry-based learning at ISHCMC is more than a teaching method, it’s an approach designed to help students succeed academically while developing into confident, responsible leaders and global citizens. By fostering curiosity and offering hands-on learning experiences, ISHCMC aims to equip students with the skills they need to thrive in today’s complex world. Graduates leave not only with academic credentials but also with the ability to think creatively, act with empathy, and contribute meaningfully to society.
