Under a Prime Ministerial decision, recently signed by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, an irrigation plan for the Mekong Delta river basin for the period up to 2030, with a vision toward 2050, has been approved.
The plan covers the entire administrative boundaries of Can Tho City and the provinces of Vinh Long, Ca Mau, An Giang, Dong Thap, and parts of Tay Ninh Province, spanning a total area of approximately 4 million hectares (excluding islands).
The plan’s overarching goal is to proactively regulate water resources and adapt to upstream developments and climate change, ensuring adequate water supply, drainage, and irrigation for agriculture, domestic use, and economic sectors.
It also aims to promote flexible transitions in production models, enhance disaster prevention and response capacity, and support sustainable socio-economic development, environmental protection, and water security.
By 2030, the irrigation plan seeks to ensure water supply for 17–18 million people across the region; provide water for industrial parks, export processing zones, and high-tech zones through the irrigation system; secure water for rural areas and agricultural production under drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion conditions comparable to those of 2015–2016; and guarantee flood control with a 1% frequency level for major urban centers in the Delta region.
