Long Thanh International Airport in southern Dong Nai province will manage 80% of international flights and 10% of domestic flights serving the Ho Chi Minh City area under an operation plan for its first phase, according to the Ministry of Construction.
Meanwhile, Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City will handle the remaining 20% of international flights and 90% of domestic routes.
The ministry noted that the feasibility study for phase 1 construction of the Long Thanh airport, approved by the Prime Minister in November 2020, envisioned the two airports functioning as a paired system.
At the Long Thanh airport, all international routes of over 1,000 km will be served, while airlines may decide whether to operate shorter-haul international flights there. Domestic operations will also be left to the discretion of Vietnamese carriers.
Tan Son Nhat airport, in turn, will specialize in international routes under 1,000 km, focusing mainly on markets such as Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. These are expected to account for 15–17% of the city’s total international passenger traffic.
