Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh cut the ribbon to open the Thai Binh 2 thermal power plant in northern Thai Binh province on April 27.

Covering 131.74 ha in Thai Thuy district, the plant has a designed capacity of 1,200MW; the biggest capacity in the northern region.

The plant is expected to supply 7.2 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid, earning estimated revenue of around VND18 trillion ($759 million) a year.

It uses environmentally-friendly technology with modern wastewater treatment facilities.

Two generators have completed their trial runs and begun to generate electricity. They have supplied over 1 billion kWh to the national grid.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Chinh said the project demonstrates the correct and timely policies of the Party and the State in implementing socio-economic development and ensuring social security.

It will contribute to ensuring energy security in the northern region and the country as a whole, especially during the upcoming summer when a shortage of electricity is common in some areas.
