Singapore wants to import more types of food products from Vietnam, according to Mr. Damian Chan, CEO of the Singaporean Food Agency (SFA).
Mr. Chan expressed the import interest during a recent working session with Vietnamese Ambassador to Singapore Tran Phuoc Anh.
Mr. Chan noted that around 90% of food and food stuffs in Singapore are imported so ensuring food security is one of top priorities of the Lion State.
Vietnam is one of Singapore’s key suppliers of food and food stuffs, he said. Singaporeans are familiar with many food products imported from Vietnam such as rice, seafood, coffee, fruits and processing food, he added.
On March 11 this year, the SFA approved several livestock products from Vietnam to enter Singapore.
Regarding rice, Vietnam is one of the three biggest rice suppliers for Singapore.
Ambassador Anh stressed that Vietnamese products, including food and food stuffs, have increasingly met stricter requirements from key markets such as the US and the EU in terms of quality and prices.
He proposed Singapore to continue considering to open markets to more Vietnamese products in the coming time.
