The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) International Company Limited has officially ceased construction of a long-delayed 1,320 MW thermal power plant project in central Quang Tri province, according to provincial authorities.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Ha Sy Dong held an online meeting with EGAT on April 11 to discuss plans to deal with the consequences of the project being ended.

The company was granted an investment license in 2013 but the project has yet to be implemented. It was to be built on an area of 450 ha in the Dong Nam Economic Zone.

Total investment is estimated at over VND55 trillion ($2.3 billion).

At the meeting, Vice Chairman Dong urged EGAT to quickly reach an agreement with local authorities on measures to tackle obstacles to minimize losses for investors and Quang Tri. The province completed site clearance and built resettlement areas before EGAT sent a document to the Vietnamese Government seeking a postponement.
