There is no one model for a smart city plan

Each city has its own conditions, scale and characteristics, so it is impossible to apply a general model...

The Urban Development Agency under the Ministry of Construction recently held a workshop with the theme "Creating Smart Cities Based on Science, Technology, and Innovation."

Speaking at the event, Mr. Tran Quoc Thai, General Director of the Urban Development Agency, emphasized that humanity is entering an era of technology and digital transformation, where innovation is not just an option but a core driver shaping the future. "Developing smart cities is not merely about applying technology to management but also about creating green, safe, and livable spaces for Vietnamese citizens," he added.

According to Director Tran Quoc Thai, the Party and Government have issued several important policies to realize this direction over the years. Thanks to clear direction and decisive leadership, the smart city landscape in Vietnam is gradually taking shape.

However, the path to comprehensive smart cities still faces many challenges including mechanisms and policies, digital infrastructure, the technological workforce,...

These issues highlight the need for a comprehensive vision in developing smart cities. Therefore, Mr. Thai believes that each city must clearly identify its unique advantages and characteristics to choose an appropriate development model, avoiding following trends or copying the models of other countries. Vietnam's smart cities must place people at the center, considering citizens as the subjects of innovation, while leveraging technology to better serve sustainable development and improve the quality of life.

The Director of the Urban Development Agency affirmed that smart cities are not only a trend but also an inevitable requirement in the process of industrialization and modernization of the country. This process requires the active participation of the entire society, from state management agencies, the business community, to researchers and citizens. However, the development of smart cities needs to be implemented step by step, with focus and emphasis, suitable to the actual conditions of each locality, aiming at the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for people and sustainable national development.
