Amkor Technology is seeking approval to significantly increase the operating capacity of its semiconductor manufacturing, assembly and testing plant in Vietnam’s northern Bac Ninh Province.
According to the company’s environmental impact assessment report, Amkor Technology Vietnam has proposed raising the plant’s maximum operating capacity at Yen Phong II-C Industrial Park from around 675 million products per year, equivalent to 236.25 tons of products, to 1.2 billion products annually, or about 420 tons.
The project had previously received approval from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, allowing a total production, assembly and testing capacity of up to 3.6 billion semiconductor products per year, equivalent to 1,600 tons annually.
However, the facility is currently operating at approximately 675 million products per year, equal to about 75% of the capacity permitted.
The company said the proposed expansion is part of its roadmap toward reaching the full 1,600-ton annual capacity approved by the ministry.
Amkor inaugurated its first semiconductor plant in Bac Ninh in October 2023 with an initial investment of more than $520 million. In July 2024, Bac Ninh authorities granted an amended investment certificate to Amkor Technology Vietnam LLC, increasing the project’s total registered capital to $1.6 billion.
