Passenger transport by inland waterways in 2023 reached 289.83 million people, a year-on-year increase of 20.8 per cent, according to the Vietnam Inland Waterway Administration.
Cargo transport, meanwhile, was estimated at 431.42 million tons, up 18.5 per cent against last year, Deputy Director of the Administration Hoang Minh Toan told a meeting held recently to review the sector’s performance in 2023.
Vietnam has 310 inland ports and 6,062 wharves, including 202 cargo ports.
The sector targets increases of 10 per cent in passenger transport and 8 per cent in cargo transport in 2024.
Also addressing the meeting, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Xuan Sang asked the Administration to propose projects to upgrade infrastructure and call for investment from various social resources to boost development.
