The Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant was officially inaugurated on October 13 by the Hanoi People's Committee and Hanoi Thien Y Environmental Energy JSC, signaling a pivotal moment for the capital's waste treatment and circular economy development.
Construction began in August 2019, and in May 2022, the plant officially received its first loads of waste. To date, the plant has been completed and is operational, with a receiving capacity of 5,000 tons per day and a power generation capacity of 90 MW per hour. It is the second largest waste-to-energy plant in the world, and the largest in Southeast Asia.
The Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant applies advanced and modern treatment technology, meeting all the most stringent environmental standards, according to European and Vietnamese regulations.
The project provides a fundamental solution to Hanoi's household waste treatment problem over the past few decades, transforming waste into clean, renewable energy, and directly contributing to socio-economic development.
With a population of over 8 million, Hanoi generates approximately 7,600 tons of household waste daily. For many years, most of this waste was disposed of through landfilling, putting significant pressure on the environment, infrastructure, and people's lives. Therefore, transitioning to modern, circular, and environmentally friendly treatment technology is an urgent requirement, consistent with the global trend of sustainable development.
