The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade has proposed a pilot program to establish outlets for essential goods and services at stations along the new Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien).
The initiative aims to tap into the line's commercial potential and enhance convenience for passengers.
According to the department, integrating commercial and service spaces into metro stations is a key solution for creating new retail hubs and driving urban economic growth. This model is expected not only to deliver economic benefits but also to boost the metro system's appeal by offering a variety of amenities, including payment services, shopping, and entertainment.
The proposal draws on the experience of countries like Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, where areas surrounding metro stations are typically planned as high-density, mixed-use commercial hubs. This model provides significant convenience, allowing passengers to easily access a wide range of amenities that cater to their needs, from shopping to entertainment.
By 2035, the city aims to expand its metro network to 355 km. Therefore, the early planning and development of modern commercial models around stations are considered essential. This is expected to stimulate consumer demand and ensure the efficient utilization of urban infrastructure.
The Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien line began commercial operations on December 22, 2024, featuring 14 stations in total, including three underground.
